Introduction to Ethical Hacking & Penetration Testing

Thanks to bad people’ and the mainstream media, the term ‘hacking’ or ‘hacker’ usually viewed as a negative thing to the public. Now, we have a term called ‘Ethical hacker’ to differentiate the good and the bad one.

An ethical hacker is a computer and networking expert who systematically attempts to do a penetration testing.

Penetration testing or pentest is an authorized attack on a computer system in order to find the vulnerability and protect it from malicious hackers.

More role of security and penetration tester:

Crackers are those who break into the system and destroys

Script kiddies/pocket monkeys are young inexperienced hackers and mainly copy codes and techniques from knowledgeable hacker

Programming languages used by experienced penetration testers:

  • Practical Extraction and Report Language (Perl)
  • C
  • Python

Tiger box is a collection of OSs and hacking tools

Questions to explore

Why do we need penetration testing?
Every system must have a vulnerability, even if it updated every time, it still has. We need a penetration testing to keep improving the system and of course protecting it from malicious hackers.

What is the market value of penetration tester?
According to Payscale, the median salary for a Penetration Tester is $71,929 (2014 figures). Overall, you can expect to take home a total pay of $44,220 – $117,398. This includes your base annual salary, bonuses, profit sharing, tips, commissions, overtime pay and other forms of cash earnings, as applicable.

Is penetration test legal? How about in Indonesia?
Legalization of pentest are different in some countries. Some legalize it and some not, depending on their law. In this case, Indonesia actually legalizes it. It is written UU ITE article 34.

Penetration testing process

  • Define the scope of test > It’s like the 5w1H
  • Performing the test
  • Reporting and delivering the result

Kali Linux Testing Methodology

  1. Target scoping
  2. Information gathering
  3. Target discovery
  4. Enumerating target
  5. Vulnerability mapping
  6. Social engineering
  7. Target exploitation
  8.  Privilege escalation
  9. Maintaining access
  10. Documentation and reporting

COMP6341 Multimedia and Human-Computer Interaction Final Project; Healthy Bunny

Game title: Healthy Bunny

Game by: Ignatia Stellarista. R / 2001586180

Background:

Personally, I’m a person who likes to maintain my health. I always try to eat healthy foods everyday and everywhere. I tend to eat fruits and vegetables more. Nowadays there are lots of variants of food that we can find. Most of them are actually harmful to our body. Many people especially Millenials start eating fewer fruits and vegetables although it is good for our health. That’s why I wanted to create a game that is about healthy food.

Goal: I want children to think that eating fruits and vegetables are good for your health.

About the game:

The game is called ‘Healthy Bunny’. The reason why I choose bunny is that it seems so children friendly, and in reality, bunny eats a lot of fruits and vegetables which is suitable the concept. The game is a jumper type game. It’s a game where you have to jump over and over again until you finally reach the goal or maybe infinite. In this case, I want to make it finite so there will be an end goal.

The bunny will jump to catch fruits or vegetables until the bunny is fully healthy. There will be obstacles. The obstacles are the junk foods. If the bunny catches the junk food, their healthy mater will be decreased.

Applications:

I use Construct 2 for making the game and Adobe Photoshop for editing the sprites.

Screenshots / Game Run-through:

This is the first display of the game. The main menu.

To start the game, click Play.

Before the game start, there will be some instructions. To continue, click OK.

Press the up keyboard to jump.

If the bunny catches fruits or vegetables, Healthy will increase by 2%.

If the bunny catches the first junk food, pizza, Healthy will decrease by 1%.

If the bunny catches the second junk food, burger, Healthy will decrease by 2%.

The goal of the game is to make the bunny fully healthy or get 100% healthy. If the bunny suddenly falls before getting 100% or fully healthy, there will be an option whether the user wants to restart or return to the menu. In this case, let’s click restart.

Healthy will get back to 0%. The reason why it displays 2% is that the bunny already catches a vegetable or a fruit on that ground.

If the bunny finally gets fully healthy, a congratulation message will pop up. The user can choose to play the game again or return to the menu. In this case, let’s return to the menu.

In the menu, there is an option where you can see the fruits and vegetables’ info.

You can go back to the menu or play again.

To see the credits, click the Credits option.
